Greece’s puclic broadcaster ERT’s shut down yesterday came as a shock to many Greeks in the country and around the world. But as demonstrations and movements of support towards the public TV’s employees are still active in Athens, the Greek goverment has announced its “day after” plan for Greek public television.

Goverment spokesman, Simos Kedikoglou stated that the ‘new ERT’ will be fully fuctional by the 29th of August. The proposed bill has been posted on the internet and put to public consultation.

The name of the new company will be NERIT (New Hellenic Radio, Internet and Television).

Kedikoglou also said that NERIT will have between 1,000 and 1,200 employees, whilst all present staff will be “released and compensated”.

He added that ‘‘employees who have proven their work abilities all those years will be given priority in the recruitment process of the new company.”

Regarding the reactions from the parties of the coalition government Pasok and Dimar, Kedikglou argued that both leaders, Messrs Venizelos and Kouvelis, had been duly informed about the planned shut down of ERT’.

The major revenue of the new organization, will continue to derive from a fee collectable through electricity bills, though the amount was not specified.
